Pregnancy Lingo: What Does Gestation Mean?
I have no idea what to think I went in for my first appointment yesterday and they decided to give me an ultrasound because they had written that I was unsure of my dates. I have very irregular cycles which is why I take my BBT. According to my chart I know exactly when I ovulated because I had a distinct rise in temperature.
You’ll have a dating scan, also known as a week scan between about 10 weeks and 14 weeks of pregnancy. For most mums-to-be, this is their first scan.
Gestation is defined as the time between conception and birth. A fetus grows and develops in the womb during gestation. The gestation period is how long a woman is pregnant. Most babies are born between 38 and 42 weeks of gestation. Babies born before 37 weeks are considered premature. Babies born after 42 weeks are called postmature. Where your baby is in their development — such as whether their fingers and toes have formed — is tied to gestational age.
Gestational age is measured in weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period.
My baby’s age on the scan report is different to my stage of pregnancy. What does this mean?
A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.
Our observations showed that, after 5 complete weeks’ gestation, a small GS in the prediction models, however it assists in dating a pregnancy correctly. For the scans we used two ultrasound machines: Philips XD11 with a MHz The YS grew mm per week (R2 = ) in pregnancies that.
This measurement can be used accurately up to 14 weeks gestation. Babyvision can establish the number of babies you are expecting and if a twin pregnancy is identified it is easier to identify the type of twin pregnancy at this early stage. We will check your baby is developing normally. We also understand that this may be the first time you have seen your baby so spend the time showing you your baby and pointing out all that we are able to see. If a problem is detected whilst we do not wish to worry you about your pregnancy we think it is important for you to have the knowledge that you will be looked after carefully and professionally.
If a problem is detected during your scan we will discuss the findings with you in a sensitive way and provide you with as much information as we can. Babyvision uses excellent quality ultrasound equipment to obtain the best images, however, if you attend Babyvision and your pregnancy is earlier than 6 weeks gestation or we are unable to confirm an early viable pregnancy due to reduced image quality which may happen if the uterus is retroverted which means tilted back or have a high BMI we may offer a transvaginal internal scan during your appointment.
A transvaginal scan is sometimes used in early pregnancy because you can get a clearer ultrasound image at an earlier gestation. This scan does not harm your baby. The ultrasound probe is a similar size and shape to a tampon and this is gently inserted into the vagina. The scan will be performed with an empty bladder. This equipment is available at Babyvision and is an essential facility when providing early scans.
The benefits of the transvaginal scan will be discussed with you in full if we are unable to confirm a pregnancy with the heart beat from the abdominal scan. It is sometimes necessary to contact your local early pregnancy clinic or repeat your scan in weeks if we are unable to confirm we have seen a viable pregnancy within the uterus.

You may also have been somewhat confused to be given one due date, and then told a different day a few weeks later! So here is more about how we decide which to follow! In early pregnancy, your due date can be predicted using the first day of your last period LMP by adding days. However, once you have a 12 week dating scan then the date is determined from that scan onwards. So even if you know the exact date of intercourse that month or the date of embryo transfer if IVF this still needs to be adjusted.
It makes sense that due dates can change as time goes on!
Can your pregnancy scan give the wrong due date?
Routine ultrasound should not be offered or requested simply to confirm an ongoing early pregnancy in the absence of any clinical concerns, symptoms or specific indications. The purpose of the scan is to confirm viability, accurately establish gestational age, determine the number of viable fetuses, evaluate gross fetal anatomy and, if requested, assess the NT as part of the risk assessment for aneuploidy.
